Isobel Vanora

Isobel Vanora was born October 15th, 1975 and grew up around Boston, although she in not close with her family. She came out west for a job, and has an apartment in West Springfield. She landed a job working as an ER doctor for Baystate Medical. She soon adapted and rolled with the weirdness and wretchedness of an emergency room.

Death, Bargain and Aftermath

On Saturday, June 27th 2009, she was working at 1 o'clock in the morning. Saturday mornings are the worst for ER staff, as people get off work, start drinking, and promptly get stupid. On that night a gang-fight broke out, brown on black, and several teenagers were spilling into the emergency room with stab-and gunshot-wounds.

Isobel was wrist-deep in a boy no older then twelve with multiple stab wounds, but the kid was still screaming profanities at a rival strapped down ten feet from him, and they didn't care they were spitting up blood to exchange threats. Isobel got him stabilized and managed to sneak in a five-minute break before the next crisis was wheeled in – or more accurately, hauled in by several orderlies. A Caucasian middle-aged man with unruly hair and yellow teeth was hauled in, apparently strung out on something and howling. Deep lacerations on both his arms were spurting blood and the orderlies admitted they had no idea where he came from, he just appeared. They got him on a gurney and Isobel started working while they tried to restrain the junkie; she noted his eyes were dilated. She worked to bandage the arm wounds and ordered a toxicology screen to identify whatever concoction this guy was on. An orderly drew blood as the junkie thrashed and Isobel noticed a bar code tattooed on the back of his neck.

Isobel had almost gotten the shrieking junkie stabilized when one well-dressed woman and four men wearing black suits and gloves came storming into the ER. The woman was clearly in charge, and she immediately ordered Isobel to stop administering any medical treatment and to surrender any toxicology screens and blood samples. Isobel retorted that she'll discuss this after she finished stabilizing her patient, and the woman replied, "You're not going to do shit." In that second if distraction, the junkie snapped free of his restraints and Isobel caught what looked like a blade jutting out of his lacerations! The junkie grabbed Isobel by her throat and lifted her off the ground one-handed, as orderlies and the four men in black rushed to try and free her. The junkie shook Isobel like a dog shaking a bone, and then threw her across the room! She hit the wall and her neck broke with a sickening crack. As she slid down to the floor, she saw fog rolling in as Death came to claim her.

Something strode out of the fog towards Isobel in her last moments of life, but instead of the traditional depiction of the Grim Reaper, Isobel saw a corpsman dressed in World War I fatigues, his face covered in shadow by his collar and helmet except for two glowing pinpricks of light where his eyes should have been. The Corpsman – who introduced himself only as "Doc" – stated with finality, "You're dead." He then extended an offer: grant permission for him to merge with her, and he would keep Death at bay. She agreed, and Doc merged with her soul. As the geist completed the Bargain, Isobel's eyes opened and she turned her neck with a grinding of bone on bone. One of the nurses who had come to help – a middle-aged Hispanic woman named Consuela Lopez – crossed herself at seeing Isobel's resurrection, and immediately started praying to the Blessed Virgin.

Isobel got to her feet and the woman who barged in eyed her with calculated interest before taking the junkie, the tox-screen, and the blood and snapped her fingers. The four men with her hustled out with everything, and in seconds there was no evidence they or the junkie were ever there. Isobel was brought into an OR for a quick examination by another doctor, and her comrade concluded that Isobel was fine except for some livid bruising around her throat. Despite this, he sent her home to rest over her objections. On her way out, she sarcastically called out, "Someone want to get Consuela here off her knees so she doesn't get arthritis?"
