CPT Richard MacLeod (known as just MacLeod to most, but also "Unkie McCool" or "Dick" to a select few) is a detective in the Northampton Police Department and later a Special Consultant with the Massachusetts State Police.

• Partner of Alicia Vandernoot, in what is to be a lifelong, if inexplicable, friendship.
• Permanent bachelor
• Extremely loud, boistrous and jovial. Knows his outsized personality gets on people's nerves and either works this for his own amusement/advantage or does nice things to make up for it; for example, he has been known to show up with ice cream for the entire department. (Except Fuller. Fuck Fuller.)
• Seems to have styled his personality and off-duty wardrobe after Tom Selleck in Magnum P.I., down to the Hawaiian shirts, aviator sunglasses and visible chest rug.
• Is actually a VERY good detective under all the noise and actually has the decorations and commendations to prove it. He only ever displays them on his uniform during formal events, and only because he has to.

• At Vandernoot's behest, became a Special Consultant for the Massachusetts State Police after she became NPD's Chief. ¹⁾ He is semi-retired from that but is still called in to investigate unusual cases. Is reassigned to the Northampton barracks after the showdown at the Asylum to look after Vandernoot while she recovered from the concussion she sustained while inside.
• Now resembles Tom Selleck in Blue Bloods.
• When Josh was little he called MacLeod "Unkie McCool" and made him a nameplate in crayon. This remains one of MacLeod’s most treasured possessions.
• Along with Vandernoot, now knows the truth about "All the weird shit that keeps happening around here." Still unsure what to make of it all, but it certainly explains a few things. His main concern is how best to keep "his people" safe, but no one is quite sure whether that extends to the department or the entire city of Northampton. ²⁾

• Purchased the red truck from evidence once it was released, named it, and has treated it like his baby since.
• 1983 Ford F150. Her engine is just about as loud as MacLeod is.
• MacLeod is still driving the truck as of 2010.
